When it comes to decluttering, there are a few questions you should ask yourself to determine what should stay and what should go. If you have to think about your answer, the chances are likely that you don’t need it. As you are evaluating, keep these questions in mind to help you declutter a bathroom.

5 Steps to Declutter a Bathroom

Step 1: Do I use this?

Ask yourself, “do I use this?” The question IS NOT, “will I possibly use it one day?” You shouldn’t have to think long on this one. You either use it, or you don’t. Be ruthless! If it doesn’t work for you, or you don’t use it, let it go.

Step 2: Is this an extra item?

How many bottles of lotion do you need? Evaluate what you need and use regularly. Choose your favorites and toss or donate the extras. Here is a list of items you can donate that might surprise you.

Step 3: Would I buy this today?

When trying to decide on decorative items, ask yourself if you still love it and if it’s your style. Is it adding beauty or function, or just adding to the clutter? If the answer is not the latter two, it’s time for it to go.

Step 4: Does this item help make my life easier or better?

You may find that there are some items that you don’t need, but you use them regularly, and they make your life simpler. Go ahead and splurge on some things, as long as they are useful or provide joy.

Step 5: Can I reduce the space this item takes up?

For items that you’re keeping, ask if you can reduce the amount of space it takes up. Check to see if you can remove the packaging for more condensed storage. Are there any multiples that you can combine? Can you transfer the item to a smaller container? Is there more appropriate storage that would make it easier to store and/or access? It’s incredible what a little creativity can do to maximize space.
